Serge Ferrari Frontside View 381 improves security for federal agents coming in and leaving the parking garage

The Federal Bureau of Investigation moved into a new 6-story building in 2014 that accommodated 400 special agents and support staff. Consolidating multiple offices into one building in San Diego was quite ambitious. One of the biggest challenges for the design team was to create a discreet parking facility that would allow agents and support staff to come and go from the facility with some level of anonymity. This project was initially begun in 2009 and took over 4 years to finalize and install.

Project Specifications:

  • Facility subject to strict security designs
  • Remove the ability for passerbys to see into the facility
  • Meet the code requirements for air circulation
  • Integrate the design of the building with its natural environment

Frontside View 381 (previously known as Soltis FT 381) was installed on FACID frames to clad the building facades and ensure adequate ventilation. With its 20% porosity, 381 provides excellent outward visibility while behaving like an opaque visual barrier when looking from the outside during daylight hours. The 381 façade material effectively prohibits people from seeing into the parking structure.

4,500 sqm of Frontside View 381 was installed. 4 different colors were chosen by the design team and the GSA to not only block the view but also look good in the local community.
